Lorin Waling
Lorin Waling passed away peacefully on March 4, 2008 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Born in Limerick, Saskatchewan on June 26, 1923, the second of four children to Lewis and Ethel Waling, Lorin grew up in northern Alberta on the family homestead in Grand Prairie. Determined to fight in WWII he enlisted in the Canadian Army at age 17. Shortly thereafter he volunteered for the First Special Service Force and departed for Fort Harrison in Helena, Mont. While training here he met and fell in love with Steffie Broderick of East Helena. They married on September 10, 1943 and together lovingly raised four children. The First Special Service Force became a galvanizing point in Lorin’s life. Comrades in arms became lifelong buddies and Joe and Dorothy Glass became inseparable friends.Returning to Helena after the war, Lorin went to school to learn the electrical trade. For many years he worked on construction projects from Whittier, Alaska to Two Harbors, Minn. and points in between, but each time the job was completed he always returned to Helena. In 1959 he moved his family to Townsend and started Townsend Electric which became a thriving success. In 1976 he sold the business and through the years a mutual bond of respect and fellowship flourished with those who continued his legacy.Throughout Lorin’s life, love for his family filled his heart and overflowed into the lives of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as his siblings and their families. Gathering the whole family together for annual trips to the cabin in Lincoln was a tradition special to everyone. Another love shared by Lorin and Steffie was travel. They enjoyed traveling, sharing time with family and friends until Steffie’s death in 1996. On October 25, 1997 Lorin married a long time and close friend, Irene Flesch. Since then he and Irene have shared a deep and loving relationship. Survivors include his wife Irene, sons Jerry (Ginny) Waling, Chandler, Ariz., David Waling, Sacramento, Calif., daughters Cheryl Hysell, Boise, Idaho, Valerie Waling, Lompoc, Calif., grandchildren Jason, Cara, Lara, Dawn, Derek, David, Brandon, Jennifer, eleven great-grandchildren, brother Miller (Marg) Waling, sister Shirley Long, Irene’s children Gail, Brad, and Brian. Lorin was preceded in death by his wife Steffie and sister Maxine Waling. Those who have known Lorin will lovingly remember him as — Friend, Dad, Grandpa, Hero, Teacher, Loving Husband… He will be missed! Viewing hours were held with a Vigil service on Sunday, March 9th at the Retz Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, March 10th at SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in East Helena. Cremation followed the Mass. Interment with military honors was held on Tuesday, March 11th at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison.
