March 20, 2008Cobra wrestlers win overall state team titleLast weekend, 1161 wrestlers converged on Billings for the combined AAU and USA Wrestling Folkstyle State Championships. This is the largest sanctioned wrestling tournament in the state with attendees from all corners of Montana. And through it all, the USA Cobra Montana Wrestling team won the overall team title bringing the traveling trophy back home to Townsend. The Cobra team has now won the title in two of the last three years—to the surprise of many larger teams around the state. The overall team title is a “Top 10” battle where each club or school designates its “top 10” athletes before the tournament starts. At the end of the tourney, each team’s point total earned by the place finishes of their top 10 determines a winner. This year, the Cobras scored 97 out of a possible 100 points. The next nearest competitor was the host club, Darkhorse Wrestling Club from Billings with 71 team points. To earn 97points, the Cobra’s had 9 state champions and a runner-up. The Cobra’s 11th man alternate also won, for a total of 10 state champions training with the Cobra team. “We went to Billings with the goal of getting that traveling trophy back in our trophy case,” said Cobra head coach, Ken Thompson. “We made a clerical error when submitting our top 10 last year or this would be our third team state championship in a row. Our website has been very busy since the win. I don’t think other programs expected us to dominate by such a large margin.” The Cobra website is www.usacobramontana.org. Listing of State Champions and complete Cobra results are as follows: TOT (6 and under): Klaus Rauser, 40 pound, 2nd; Zack Idland, 45 pound, 4th; Ethan Hoff, 55 pound, 4th.
