The Townsend Star

TThe Townsend Lady Bulldogs travelled to Butte this past weekend to participate in the Southern B Divisional Basketball Tournament. They performed well, had one impressive win and fought two tough battles against area schools. However, they ended their season with a 1-2 record in the tourney, denying them a berth in this year’s state competition.
The Lady Dogs started the tournament on Thursday evening with a match up against Whitehall. The Lady Trojans topped the Dogs in the first period, 14-11. Then in the second and third quarters, Townsend came alive and outscored their opponents 27 to 19, giving them a five point advantage going into the final period. Unfortunately, the Townsend defense couldn’t hold down the Trojan scoring attack. The Lady Dogs still scored 13 points, but Whitehall sank an unsurmountable 22 points to take the win, 55-51.

The Dogs enjoyed a 40-7 lead at halftime. Many of the younger players came into the game off the Bulldog bench during the second half and showed impressive performances. Townsend did give up 34 points in the second half, but still scored 21 points to make it a 61-41 victory.

That win put Townsend into the 9:30 a.m. match against Three Forks on Saturday. This game was a real close defensive battle with each team only scoring nine points in the first period and Townsend only up 21-18 at the half. The second half started out the same way with each team scoring 10 points in the third period. In the final quarter, the game slipped away from the Lady Dogs as they had to result to fouling and lost a couple of players to fouling out. Townsend was put out of competition with a 43-50 loss.

Most fans agreed that the girls should have won both the games they lost, but it just didn’t work out for them. Whitehall, Townsend’s first loss, went on to win the Divisional Tournament.
