The Townsend girls tennis team had little trouble dispatching their district rival, Whitehall, on Thursday, winning their first meet of the season 5-1.
Townsend won the state championship last year while Whitehall placed sixth.
“They’re probably our biggest divisional rival,” said Bulldogs head coach John O’Dell. “I was really happy with the way we played in the first meet of the year. “We seemed to get better as the meet went on.”
O’Dell said that his No. 1 singles player, Kyndra Thompson, has taken a big jump from the season before. She was the Bulldogs’ No. 3 player last year before taking sixth individually at state. She defeated Whitehall’s Austin Peatrity by a score of 6-0, 6-0. “A 6-0, 6-0 win is really huge,” O’Dell said. “The whole lineup our girls played pretty solid.”
No. 1 singles — Kyndra Thompson, Twn, def. Austin Peatrity, Wht, 6-0, 6-0.
No. 2 singles — Gaelyn Domino, Twn, def. Michelle Schazinski, Wht, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
No. 3 singles — Helen Hobbes, Wht, def. Jen Johnson, Twn, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Cobra wrestlers win in state, national events
This past weekend, wrestlers with the USA Cobra Montana Wrestling program traveled in two directions to win major accolades. Nine Cobra members traveled to Great Falls for the USA Wrestling Greco Roman State Championships while five Cobras traveled to Iowa for the USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Championships.
In the Great Falls Greco Roman State Meet, the Cobras won the small team title with six grapplers winning state championships. Klaus Rauser won his first state title in the Pee Wee 40 pound class. Zack Idland also won his first state title in the Pee Wee 45 pound class. Kameron Rauser won the Bantam 55 pound class. Cody Jackson won in Novice 60 pounds. Gabe Schroeck won Schoolboy 77 pounds. Christopher Wagner took the title in Schoolboy 105 pound class. In addition to the state champions, Zack Schroeck took 3rd in Bantam 50 pounds. Seth Schroeck took 5th in Midget 55 pounds and Tony Michelson took 3rd in Junior 125 pounds.
After the Greco Roman tourney, several Cobras stayed in Great Falls for a Freestyle tourney. In that tournament all three Schroeck siblings—Zack, Seth, and Gabe—won their respective weight classes. Cody Jackson bumped up a weight class to increase competition and won. Christopher Wagner took second in his division.
USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals Results From Cedar Falls Iowa
While their teammates were winning the team title in Great Falls, five Cobra members traveled to Iowa for Folkstyle Nationals. Valyen Rauser won the national title in the Cadet 105 pound class. Rauser was the runner-up last year. Twin brother, Jade Rauser finished second in the Cadet 98 pound class making national headlines for knocking off last year’s National Triple Crown Champ 6 to 0 on his way to the finals. Grant Boggs took fifth in the Schoolboy 70 pound division. Britton Thompson and Johnny LaFountain were each one match victory from making the awards podium in their respective weight and age classes.
The Cobra club has now completed the Folkstyle season for the year and practices have converted to Freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling. The Cobras are holding a training camp this weekend running from 10 am to 3 pm both Saturday and Sunday. The camp focus is on Freestyle wrestling to prepare wrestlers for Freestyle State in two weeks. All wrestlers from any club are welcome to attend the training camp. USA Cobra wrestling to hold Open House
The nationally acclaimed USA Cobra Montana Wrestling program would like to invite any interested community members to an open house this Saturday, April 12th from 10 am until 3 pm. The Cobras and other training partners will be engaged in a Freestyle training camp at the time, so expect a loud and busy atmosphere. Community members are encouraged to visit to see the quality of the facility and weight room as well as to view the caliber of training. Those who visit between noon and 1 pm can join the lunch break of hot dogs and hamburgers for a nominal fee/donation. The club is located on the corner of Highway 12 and Highway 287 on the south side of the intersection—at the only traffic light in Townsend.
“We have built one of very few year-round wrestling programs in the Western U.S. and we’d like to showcase the facility,” says Cobra head coach Ken Thompson. “We have wrestlers from 4 years old through 21 years old working simultaneously in our facility. If you are curious about the program, we’d be happy to welcome you for a visit.” Thompson will be attending his daughter’s tennis tournament during the open house, but the Cobra assistant coaching staff will be present.
Cobra assistant coach, Ron Boggs, explains, “The Cobra club is designed to remove the barriers typical of community based youth sports programs. Instead of Townsend always competing against Boulder and Butte, always battling Helena and Havre, tussling against Glasgow... at Cobra we try to bring multiple communities together. In the past 3 years, we’ve had athletes from 28 different Montana communities join together to train. We have had kids travel from Minnesota, Idaho and Oregon to train with us as well. In a state with very low population like Montana, for our athletes to compete with programs from more populous states we feel that it’s critical to provide a facility where the hardest workers of all skill levels can join together to make each other better. Our track record on several national circuits proves that this system works.”
